10 Contra Costa Shark Tank Youth Competition finalists announced

Students ages 11-17 selected from over 300 applicants 

Finalist pitch event February 6th at Lafayette library will determine $1,000 winner

MORAGA, CALIFORNIA –Ten students in Contra Costa County have been selected as finalists for the first Contra Costa Shark Tank Youth Competition (www.contracostasharktank.org).

The competition, open to all Contra Costa County students in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, is a fun way to promote youth entrepreneurship. When young people succeed as entrepreneurs, they improve their own lives while also contributing to the economic development of their local communities.

“The best way to learn about entrepreneurship is by starting a business,” explains high school junior Maya Hammerman, the competition founder and one of the judges. “My journey as an entrepreneur started in elementary school. I created the competition to inspire kids in Contra Costa County to start or grow any type of business from traditional ones such as lemonade stands, to innovative new products or services that they create.”

The ten finalists listed below were selected by members of the Campolindo High School Entrepreneurship Club from over 300 applicants.

DeSaulnier announces 2023 Congressional App Challenge winner

Dougherty Valley High junior from San Ramon invents CogniPro

3 other Dougherty Valley students and Dublin High team tie for second, third place winner from Monte Vista High

On Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) announced that Sania Bidurukontam of San Ramon is the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge (CAC) for California’s 10th Congressional District. Bidurukontam, is a junior at Dougherty Valley High School. She invented the CogniPro app, which aims to reduce misdiagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and help mental health professionals properly diagnose ADHD. The app includes a 2D platform game and embedded eye tracking to monitor levels of hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention, the most common symptoms of ADHD.

“It’s such a joy to see students’ creativity and talent on display each year during our Congressional App Challenge,” said DeSaulnier. “As a proud advocate in Congress for improving youth mental health, I am proud to see young people like Sania working on ways to better identify and address the challenges faced by her peers. Congratulations, Sania!”

Second place was a four-way tie with Advita Goyal (Dougherty Valley High School), Aryan Agrawal (Dougherty Valley High School), Prisha Marpu (Dougherty Valley High School), and a team comprised of Rohan Vij, Ayush Garg, Mohit Varikuti, and Jimin Lim (Dublin High School)—all recognized for their apps SkinScan, WellTeen, Med Track, and Politica AI, respectively. SkinScan helps to identify and monitor skin conditions, WellTeen helps to manage stress and promote mental wellbeing, Med Track helps users track their daily medications, and Politica AI helps users identify political biases and misinformation while reading the news. Third place was awarded to Jacob Trentini (Monte Vista High School) for his app BreatheFree, which monitors air quality and pollen levels.

This year’s winners were chosen by a panel of judges from the STEM and education fields, all of whom live or work in California’s 10th Congressional District.

The CAC is a public initiative to encourage young people to learn how to code in an effort to inspire creativity and encourage interest in STEM education. In the eight years of the CAC, the program has yielded 46,928 applicants across all 50 states.

Supervisors seek nominations for Contra Costa County Youth Hall of Fame

To be honored during 30th Annual César E. Chávez Commemorative Celebration March 26; deadline Feb. 16

The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Contra Costa County Youth Hall of Fame Awards. These awards are presented annually to outstanding county residents between 12 and 18 years old.

Students will be recognized at the 30th Annual César E. Chávez Commemorative Celebration on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 11 am in Board Chambers at 1025 Escobar St. in Martinez. Community members can also join the event live on Contra Costa Television channels and the County’s website.

Nominees should demonstrate exemplary behavior in one of five categories:

  • GoodSamaritan: Goes out of their way to do for others without seeking recognition
  • Volunteerism:Lends a helping hand for the good of the community; Gives their time and energy to a worthy cause or organization
  • Teamwork:Works unselfishly for the good of the team
  • Leadershipand Civic Engagement: A natural leader who inspires others and works to make a difference in school and the community
  • Perseverance:Has worked hard to overcome obstacles and achieve success

Stolen car driver arrested after crashing into Hercules police vehicle during pursuit

On Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2023, at approximately 12:03 PM officers received a Flock camera notification of a stolen gray Hyundai Sonata in area of Willow Avenue at Sycamore Avenue. An officer observed the Hyundai turning right onto San Pablo Ave from Sycamore Ave. The officer attempted to initiate a traffic enforcement stop and notified other officers in the area on the radio.

Another officer that was on an unrelated traffic enforcement stop John Muir Parkway at San Pablo Ave. observed the Hyundai begin to accelerate away at a high rate of speed. The officer had an opportunity to deploy stop sticks successfully deflating three tires.

Officers trailed the Hyundai eastbound on State Route 4 for community safety purposes. The Hyundai was not able to evade the officers effectively due to the tires being deflated completely. As the trailing progressed on State Route 4 the integrity of the Hyundai’s rims failed causing the vehicle to drive erratically and slower. An officer began a traffic break to help slow down other vehicles on the highway. The driver lost control and spun-out facing west on State Route 4. The driver attempted to continue evading again and drove directly toward a patrol vehicle that was stopped with the officer inside. The Hyundai struck the officer’s vehicle. The officers were able to safely arrest the driver.

The driver and officer sustained no injuries. The driver was then medically cleared at the hospital and later transported to juvenile hall. The Hyundai was towed.

  • Be a good role model and recognize the importance of working relationships with other professionals and volunteers. The executive must have communication skills and be able to explain the program’s goals and objectives to the public.

Desired Skills:

  • Strong marketing, fund-raising and program development background is highly desired.
  • Non-profit, fundraising or sales experience is a plus.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking and interacting with diverse audiences. Excellent people skills, enthusiastic, punctual, responsible and creative.
  • Self-motivated individual with solid time management skills and strong organizational skills in management, budgeting, and planning.
  • Committed to personal and professional productivity, while maintaining high ethical and professional working standards.

Requirements:

  • Must be willing to accept and meet the Boy Scout of America’s leadership and membership standards and subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (transcript with the date degree conferred stated is required for employment).
  • Attained 21 years of age or older unless prohibited by any applicable law.
  • Ability to work varied hours when necessary, evening activities and weekend work is frequently required to achieve positive objectives.
  • Ability to travel for training at least once a year for one to two weeks.
  • A Scouting background is helpful but not required for employment.
  • Offers for employment are subject to criminal, reference and motor vehicle background checks.

Antioch suspect in Oakley homicide and multiple teen victim shooting released Friday

Oakley, CA – 4:49 PM – The homicide of a 16-year-old male, and the shooting of three other teenagers that occurred on October 21st in the 400 block of Shannon Way has been the top priority of the Oakley Police Department since it occurred. The investigators of the Oakley Police Department have worked tirelessly and continuously on this case over the past week. The Department has processed a large amount of electronic and digital evidence and spoken to many people in relation to the investigation. (See related articles here and here)

On October 25, 2023, the Oakley Police Department arrested Jason Walizada (18, Antioch) in connection with these heinous crimes. Walizada was booked into the Main Detention Facility in Martinez for a warrant, which was obtained by Oakley PD.

This case continues to be an ongoing and very active investigation. With this being the situation, we are unable to speak about the details of the case or what we have uncovered so far. Walizada will be released from custody later today pending further developments in our investigation. This latest development is always considered to be a possibility in major cases like ours where there are large amounts of evidence to process and sort through.

“This case represents the largest, most violent and deadly mass-shooting involving youth in the history of Oakley,” said Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard. “We are not done in our pursuit of justice in this killing and it is our end goal to remove all responsible parties from free society and incarcerate them. I previously stated our work is not done – we will not rest until we have successfully achieved the end goal in this case.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023 at 11:12 PM Oakley police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Shannon Way on the report a shooting had just occurred and several people had been shot.  Officers arrived on scene a short while later and located five spent 9mm shell casings in front of the residence. Officers also found a total of four victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Tragically a 16-year-old juvenile was pronounced deceased on scene by medical personnel. Next of kin has been notified. The other three victims were transported to John Muir Walnut Creek with non-life-threatening injuries.

Additional resources, to include Oakley police detectives, additional officers and administration were called in.

The suspect fled the scene prior to officers arriving and has not been located. This was a very chaotic scene and Oakley police personnel are actively working with dozens of potential witnesses in an attempt to ascertain the identification of the suspect. At this point it does appear as if there was only one suspect.

Officers were dispatched to this residence approximately thirty minutes prior to the shooting regarding a loud party. Officers arrived at that time and spoke to an 18-year-old female resident who was advised of the noise complaint. The female advised the party was being shut down and they were trying to get people to leave but kids kept showing up. Officers asked if she needed help shutting down the party and she declined assistance.

One witness advised that after officers left the residence, a group of 20-30 kids showed up in front of the residence but could not get into the house due to the front door being locked. The group entered the backyard through the side gate. Shortly after, screaming was heard coming from inside the home and several people were seen running out the front door.  Shortly after that, approximately five-six shots were heard being fired in front of the residence, which is consistent with the observations of our officers and the evidence they have located so far.

“This is an active investigation, and it is our top priority right now. I have spoken to the Oakley personnel who were at this scene, and I have been made aware of all of the investigative steps that need to be taken. Our commitment to our community is heightened due to the fact the suspect and the weapon used in this crime are still not accounted for. This is very much of a “no rest until an arrest” approach for our investigators and officers. Every plausible lead is going to be followed up on until this case is resolved.

As I write this there is not yet enough information that has been developed about the suspect in this case, for me to broadcast out. As soon as I have something to put out that will benefit our investigation, I will be sure to do so and I will make an appeal to our community to assist us in locating the suspect.

No parent should ever have to receive the news that happened last night and live through the horror of losing a child- I am very sorry this happened, and I offer sincere condolences.

I will update all of you as soon as I can. If you do have any information about this shooting please call the Oakley Police Department at 925-625-8060, advise the dispatcher you have information regarding the shooting that happened on Shannon Way and you will be connected to the appropriate person.

10/23/23 UPDATE: The shooting/homicide that occurred on Saturday, October 21st in the 400 block of Shannon Way remains the top priority of the Oakley Police Department and we have been steadily working on it every hour since it occurred.

I am providing the following facts about the victims in this case:

  • 16-year-old male- deceased (gunshot wounds)
  • 17-year-old female- released from hospital (gunshot wounds)
  • 16-year-old male- still hospitalized (gunshot wounds)
  • 15-year-old male- still hospitalized (gunshot wounds)

Our investigators have spoken to multiple people who were associated with the party or witnessed the tragic events that occurred. We have sourced several videos from the neighborhood that we believe are key to our investigation and we continue to scour for electronic/ digital evidence. We are doing all of these things in hopes of making an arrest in this case.

It has been brought to our attention, several students walked off of the Freedom High School campus, today, Monday, Oct. 23rd out of fear that was driven by an unverified and unvetted rumor. It appears as if the presence of this rumor on social media created even more concern. So far, our investigation has not revealed any information that suggests there is a threat of violence at any school due to the shooting on Saturday night and we urge families to resume normal school and daily activities.

The Oakley Police Department acknowledges the assistance rendered by the Brentwood Police Department and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office East Contra Costa Fire Department and the American Medical Response ambulances. This was a multi-casualty event, and we appreciate all of the assistance we received. This case remains a multi-faceted investigation.

“I have received several briefs on this case and the direction it is going in. I feel confident in the ability and skills of our investigators to bring this case to a positive resolution. The more I learn about this case the more angry and sad I get that a multi-casualty event occurred. The fact that it involved juveniles- children, makes it even worse. This does not belong in Oakley this does not belong anywhere.

My investigators have my full support to do what they have to do to identify the killer in this case and to get him into custody”.   

Brentwood officer in stable condition following stabbing by teen Wednesday

On October 11, 2023, at about 5:35 p.m. officers responded to a report of a subject in the area of Brentwood City Park armed with a kitchen knife. The caller reported that, at times, the subject appeared to be taunting other people with the knife.

As officers arrived on scene, they contacted the male, a 16-year-old juvenile. After numerous attempts to de-escalate the situation, an officer moved in to detain the juvenile. As he did, the juvenile stabbed the officer. A bystander assisted other officers in physically detaining the juvenile, who was subsequently taken into custody.

The officer sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital.

We have determined that there are no outstanding subjects and there is no threat to the general public.

The officer is stable and recovering and our Investigations Unit will be meeting with the District Attorney’s Office to determine what charges will be filed against the juvenile.

Four Contra Costa students receive Eden Housing scholarship awards

A total of $107,779 in funds given to 34 students throughout California

More than $1 million donated to students over the last 31 years through the Howard T. Collins Memorial Scholarship program

Eden Housing announced its 2023 Howard T. Collins Memorial Scholarship recipients today, awarding $107,779 to 34 students throughout California. The program awards scholarships to individuals of all ages who are current residents of properties managed by Eden Housing. Students must be currently enrolled in a course of study and pursuing their advanced educational, academic and/or career advancement and vocational goals at California colleges and universities.

The program launched in 1993 and is named in honor of former Eden housing board member Howard T. Collins. Collins was known for his passion for justice and tireless work to expand opportunity and access to higher education. To date, the program has provided over $1 million in scholarship funds to more than 620 California residents.

“For many scholarship recipients, they are the first in their families to attend college,” said Eden Housing CEO Linda Mandolini. “By investing in their education dreams, we help improve their long-term career prospects, earning potential, personal development and financial security for their families. These students become actively engaged in their communities, contributing to society in ways that will benefit us all for years to come. We can’t wait to learn about their future accomplishments.”

This year’s scholarship recipients are from the following counties: Contra Costa, Alameda, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Joaquin, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Sonoma.

Monica Chicas, a recipient who resides in Antioch and is attending CSU East Bay, said the scholarship is a life-changing gift. She shared that she “Feels blessed and honored to be able to have that help,” and that the scholarship will “allow her to focus on completing her assignments and attending classes, while also boosting her self-esteem.” (See Chicas’ video interview)

Three other Contra Costa County students received scholarships:

  • Alicia Freeman pursuing an Associate Degree at Contra Costa College
  • Devon Gordon pursuing an AA in Sociology at the College of San Mateo
  • Ariel Brown pursuing a B.S. in Nursing at Arizona State University

Congratulating the scholarship recipients were members of Eden’s board of directors and scholarship committee; Eden’s president and CEO, Linda Mandolini; presenting sponsors US Bank and many of the elected officials that represent the recipients in their district. Criteria:
