Two Antioch men shot, one killed in Pittsburg, drive to police station Friday

24-year-old killed, 21-year-old suffering from multiple gunshot wounds transported to local hospital is in serious, but stable, condition.

On July 14, 2023, at 5:12pm Pittsburg Police officers responded to the 2100 block of Crestview Lane after dispatch received a call of gunshots heard in the area. As officers were responding, a vehicle entered the Pittsburg Police Department parking lot and the driver summoned officers to his car. The officers stopped and found the driver and one passenger inside the vehicle, both suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers rendered medical aid to the two men until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, the passenger, a 24-year-old male of Antioch, did not survive. UPDATE: He was later identified as Trevon Richardson.

The driver, a 21-year-old male of Antioch, was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in serious, but stable, condition.

As these officers were tending to the victims in the police department parking lot, more officers responded to the area of Crestview Lane in Pittsburg where the original caller heard gunshots. This is where officers located evidence of a shooting. Detectives were called in and are actively working leads.

Due to this being an active investigation, the identities of the victims are being withheld and there will be no further information released at this time.

Rocketship Education issues 2022-23 annual report of activities in California

As community schools, we deeply engage our families in their student’s academic life and build our school community around our families. Our Care Corps is an expansion of Rocketship’s community schools model, allowing us to support the whole child and families inside and outside of the classroom. Our full-time Care Corps coordinators help our families navigate support systems and get the assistance they need by overcoming language barriers, red tape, and lack of internet access to connect them to vital services that are too often cumbersome and complicated. Care Corps coordinators are fully dedicated to helping families meet their basic needs so their children can thrive in school.

Rocketship Education operates the Delta Prep TK-5th school in Antioch, Futuro Academy TK-5th in Concord in Contra Costa County, and 11 other schools in California, three in Tennessee, one in Texas with a second opening this fall, two in Wisconsin and three in Washington, D.C.

We’re so proud to have once again holistically served thousands of families through Care Corps in the 2022-2023 school year. This past year:

Partnering with the Healthy Kids Foundation and K-12 Health East Bay, we provided free health screenings for 5,655 students across the Bay Area and partnered with Vision to Learn to give free eyeglasses to 618 Rocketship students.

We partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank to feed our families – distributing almost 11,000 food kits to families in San Jose and the East Bay.

We partnered with City Team Ministries to offer a pop-up closet for our families at Rocketship Brilliant Minds, helping clothe over 200 households.

We also partnered with Bay Area Urban Barber College to give over 500 Rocketeers and their siblings free school supplies and haircuts.

Partnering with the State of California and the Santa Clara County Department of Health, we hosted a vaccination clinic and community resource fair for our San Jose families.

And last, but not least, our very own Ms. Elena organized a Rocketship folklorico group of 80 students that performed for the community at the Vietnamese Association in San Jose every Wednesday.

Foulger a double winner in Hetrick Memorial, Shrader, Tuttle also Antioch Speedway winners

Antioch, CA…July 8…Troy Foulger of Oakley won the 25 lap IMCA Modified Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was his third win of the season in the Bowers Motorsports Modified as he maintains the point lead in that division. He also won the IMCA Stock Car race earlier in the evening. This was the Eighth Annual Hetrick Memorial race, and this was his second win in that event, paying $1,250 on this occasion.

Foulger drew the front row for the feature race, but Josh Combs of Roseville jumped into the early lead. Following a yellow flag for Gary Hetrick on Lap 2, Foulger bolted into the lead on the restart with Oakley’s Kellen Chadwick in tow. Bobby Hogge IV of Salinas settled into third and made an inside pass in Turn 4 on Lap 5 to take second from Chadwick. Foulger saw his lead erased by a Lap 9 yellow flag for Sean Wilson of Oakley. Foulger had to deal with multiple yellow flags over the next half-dozen laps, but he beat Hogge on each ensuing restart. Foulger was just too smooth during the final 10 laps and brought it home to a satisfying win. Hogge settled for second ahead of Chadwick, Nick DeCarla of Martinez and Andrew Pearce of Oakley.

Kenny Shrader of Pacheco picked up the win in the 20 lap IMCA Sport Modified Main Event. The win moved him into a tie with Jason Ryan Jr of Oakley for the point lead and was his third-straight win in this event. It also paid him $1,000.

Mark Garner of Antioch set the early pace ahead of Haley Gomez of Antioch. Gomez surrendered second to Shrader a lap later. A yellow flag waved for a Billy Garner spin in Turn 4 on Lap 7. Shrader took the lead from Mark Garner on the restart with Tommy Fraser of Antioch making a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 9 for third. An outside pass on the bach stretch on Lap 12 put Fraser into second, but the tenacious Garner regained that position two laps later. Ryan moved up to battle Fraser for the third position, grabbing the spot on Lap 18, and Shrader brought it home a happy winner ahead of Mark Garner, Ryan, Fraser and Trevor Clymens of Brentwood.

Jacob Tuttle won the 25 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event. The Oakley driver had picked up a win in the Ted Finkenbinder ownerd car during the County Fair, and he led every lap on this occasion in victory.

Dylan Newberry of Brentwood was an early second before being overtaken by Jarrett Soares of Gilroy with a Turn 2 pass on Lap 13. Moments later, Steve Bruno of Pittsburg got out of shape exiting Turn 4 and veered into the path of Anthony Snow of Wilton, resulting in Snow doing a cartwheel down the front straightaway. Snow was uninjured. Tuttle led the restart ahead of Soares and led the rest of the way in victory. Brentwood’s Bob Newberry ended up third, followed by Dylan Newberry of Brentwood and point leader James East of Oakley.

Troy Foulger won his sixth IMCA Stock Car Main Event. The point leader took the lead at the halfway point of the race and won by a wide margin.

Terry DeCarlo Jr of Martinez set the early pace ahead of Rio Vista’s Jason Robles and Foulger. Foulger got passed by Mitch Enos of Manteca with an inside move in Turn 4 of the seventh lap. However, Foulger stuck it up on the outside and made a high pass around Enos and Robles to claim second on Lap 8. Foulger closed in on DeCarlo very quickly and made a high pass in Turn 2 of the 11th circuit to grab the lead. Foulger stretched his advantage to a straightaway in victory with Robles beating DeCarlo in a near photo finish at the line for second. Enos of Manteca ended up fourth ahead of Scott Foster of Oakley.

Racing continues next Saturday night with the IMCA Sport Modifieds back in action along with the Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stocks, IMCA Stock Cars, Print Club Mini Stocks and 600 Micro Sprints all in action. For further information, go to www.antiochspeedway.com.

Three vehicle fatal crash on Vasco Road Monday morning

Two drivers in head-on crash die at the scene

This morning, Monday, July 10, 2023, at approximately 6:37 am, CHP Contra Costa responded to a three-vehicle crash on Vasco Road south of Walnut Boulevard.

Our preliminary investigation indicates a silver Honda Fit, with one occupant, and a silver Nissan Altima, with one occupant, were traveling southbound on Vasco Road while a grey Acura Integra, with one occupant, was traveling northbound on Vasco Road. The Nissan collided into the rear of the Honda then traveled into the northbound lane and collided head on with the Acura.

The driver of the Nissan and the driver of the Acura were pronounced deceased on scene. The driver of the Honda sustained suspected minor injuries and was transported to the hospital.

Antioch man fatally struck by vehicle while walking in Walnut Creek Monday

On July 3rd, at 1:21 p.m., a 911 caller reported a vehicle collided with a pedestrian on Ygnacio Valley Road, east of the intersection at Lennon Lane. Officers arrived and found a male pedestrian conscious, but with significant injuries. Preliminary details indicated the driver’s vehicle drifted to the right, hopped the curb, and struck the pedestrian who was doing maintenance work at that location. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

Officers and AMR personnel provided medical aid to the pedestrian before he was transported to the hospital. Unfortunately, the pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with responding officers.

According to Bay City News, the victim was identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office as Cornelio Tovar Sanchez, age 54 of Antioch.

BRENTWOOD, CA – In partnership with the City of Brentwood, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) is constructing the Mokelumne Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing to provide safe access to cyclists and pedestrians for commuting and recreational travel, reconnecting two sides of the trail that were separated by the expansion of State Route 4.

This overnight closure will facilitate the removing of the temporary structure that was used to support the bridge and will impact State Route 4 in the eastbound direction. CCTA and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) have scheduled the closure during the early morning hours in order to minimize impacts to the motoring public.

In order to ensure crew and public safety during the planned construction work, a temporary nighttime freeway closure in the eastbound direction of State Route 4 will occur between Saturday, July 8 and Sunday, July 9, 2023 on the following schedule (weather permitting):

Eastbound Highway 4 will be closed between Lone Tree Way and Sand Creek Road from 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 8 until 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2023.

DetoursDetours will be in place to reroute drivers around the closure and are planned as follows:

Eastbound traffic will be directed to exit at Lone Tree Way, go eastbound to Shady Willow Lane, then southbound on Shady Willow Lane to Sand Creek Road, before proceeding westbound on Sand Creek Road to the eastbound State Route 4 on-ramp.

Future Freeway Closures

Additional overnight closures will be needed over the course of the next several weeks (weather dependent) to facilitate ­­­­construction work­­­­­­­­ of the future Mokelumne Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing. Additional information regarding dates and detours will be provided once the schedule is confirmed. This project is anticipated to be complete in late summer or early fall of 2023.About the Contra Costa Transportation Authority

Golobic wins Sprint Car Challenge Race at Antioch Speedway

Pittsburg’s Baugh wins Hobby Stock Main Event

Antioch, CA…July 1…Shane Golobic of Fremont won the 35 lap Winged 360 Sprint Car Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the return of the Sprint Car Challenge Tour to the Speedway for the first time in several seasons. Among the many accomplishments for Golobic is a win in a World of Outlaws race at Antioch Speedway back in 2013.

Justin Sanders of Aromas set the early pace ahead of Penngrove’s Chase Johnson and Golobic. Following a yellow flag on Lap 5, Johnson put the moves on Sanders to take the lead. Golobic slipped past Sanders for second on the 10th lap with a yellow flag waving on Lap 15. Johnson continued to lead Golobic on the restart. Following a yellow flag on Lap 22, Golobic started pressuring Johnson for the lead on the restart. A yellow flag waved a lap later. This time around, however, Golobic managed to get a good restart and slipped past Johnson for the lead. Golobic led through one more yellow flag in the final 10 laps to bring home the victory. Johnson settled for second ahead of Sanders, series point leader Justyn Cox of Sacramento and Tanner Carrick of Lincoln.

Jared Baugh of Pittsburg won the 25 lap Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock Main Event. This was his first win of the year after Kenneth Robles had driven his car to a win a few weeks earlier.

Aidan Ponciano of Oakley set the early pace ahead of point leader Grayson Baca of Brentwood and Jewell Crandall of Antioch. A yellow flag waved for Trent Golden of Pittsburg in Turn 4 on Lap 8. The restart saw Ponciano leading with Baugh charging into second. Baugh began pressuring Ponciano before making a low pass in Turn 4 of the 15th lap to take the lead. The 17th lap saw both second place Ponciano and third place Baca head for the pits as a yellow flag flew moments later. Baugh led the restart as Kevin Brown of Oakley started challenging Crandall for second. Crandall maintained her spot, and Brown surrendered third to Ken Johns of Antioch on Lap 23. Baugh brought it home a happy winner with Crandall a career best second. Johns beat Brown back to the line for third as James Graessle of Antioch ended up fifth.

Racing continues next Saturday night with the Eighth Annual Hetrick Memorial race. Purse money was just announced with the IMCA Modifieds racing for $1,250 to win, the IMCA Sport Modifieds receiving $1,000 to win and the IMCA Stock Cars competing for $500 for the victory.
