Selma man found guilty of second-degree murder for 2017 DUI crash in Concord

Today, Tuesday, June 11, 2019, a Contra Costa County jury found defendant Bo Robledo of Selma, California guilty of second-degree murder for a 2017 driving under the influence collision in Concord. Robledo was also convicted of driving under the influence causing great bodily injury at the time of the fatal crash that claimed the life of 21-year-old Natalie Davies, a resident of Concord.

Just before midnight on November 5, 2017, Robledo’s vehicle collided head-on with the victim’s vehicle near Kinne Bridge on Willow Pass Road in Concord. Robledo’s high rate of speed and intoxication caused the deadly collision. The collision also injured victim Zachary Punty and left him with significant life-altering injuries.

Robledo now faces a sentence of 23 years to life in state prison. Sentencing will occur on July 26, 2019 in front of the Honorable Rebecca Hardie in Department 5 of the Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez. Contra Costa County Deputy District Attorney Derek Butts prosecuted the case on behalf of the People. The case originated in the Office’s Homicide Unit.

DDA Butts was recently honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as part of the organization’s 2019 Law Enforcement Recognition event. DDA Butts was recognized for his dedication in prosecuting DUI murder cases, including the recent convictions of defendants Fred Lowe and Lemuel Wilson.

The jury found Robledo guilty of the following charges:

  • Second-Degree Murder
  • Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated with a prior conviction
  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Causing Injury Within 10 Years of Another DUI Offense
  • Driving with a .08% Blood Alcohol Content Causing Inquiry Within 10 Years of Another DUI Offense
  • Driving When Privilege Suspended or Revoked For A Driving Under The Influence Conviction

Oakland driver ejected, dies in crash on Highway 4 in Concord Sunday night

Sunday night at about 8:27 pm, Contra Costa CHP was advised of a two vehicle collision on HWY-4 westbound, just east of Port Chicago Highway, in the city of Concord. Upon emergency personnel and CHP arrival, it was determined that a blue BMW M3 and a silver Toyota Camry collided and then the BMW subsequently went off the roadway and plummeted down onto the Railroad tracks at Kinne Blvd. (which is below the highway and next to the old Concord Naval Weapons Station). The solo male driver (35 years old from Oakland) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Coroners Office will be handling the release of his identity.

In the initial investigation, it appears that the solo male driver of the BMW was traveling on westbound HWY-4 at a reported high rate of speed and for unknown reasons drove into the dirt center median and lost control of the BMW. Then veered across all lanes of traffic towards the right shoulder and subsequently drove off HWY-4 and plummeted down to the railroad tracks below on Kinne Blvd., causing major damage. The driver was ejected and found a distance away from the BMW and was pronounced deceased on scene. The solo male driver of the Toyota Camry was not injured and remained on scene for the investigation.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were a factor in this collision as it is still under investigation. If anyone witnessed this collision or the events leading up to it, please contact Contra Costa CHP in Martinez, (925) 646-4980.

18-year-old Pittsburg male also arrested for unrelated incident

On Thursday, June 06, 2019, at approximately 8:31 PM, Concord Police Officers responded to the 2000 block of Diamond Blvd regarding a fight at a restaurant involving several patrons. Officers arrived and encountered a large crowd outside of the restaurant. The preliminary investigation revealed that two females, who were known to each other, got into a physical fight inside of the restaurant. The fight ended prior to police arrival. Officers questioned several people including the involved parties. They determined that the fight was due to conflict that had occurred in the past between the two involved females.

As a result, a 19-year-old black female adult and a 16-year-old female juvenile (both Antioch residents) were arrested for battery. An 18-year-old male from Pittsburg was also arrested for an unrelated incident. The victim sustained a minor injury as a result of the fight. Video surveillance from the restaurant was not available at the time the police were on scene. But, video of the incident was posted on NBC Bay Area and can be viewed, here. Man arrested for burglary, false imprisonment of ex-girlfriend, child in Concord Friday morning

On Friday, June 7, 2019, at approximately 7:29 AM, Concord Police Officers responded to the 1700 block of Thornwood Drive regarding a 911 call from a frantic woman. The woman called to report that her ex-boyfriend had gotten into her house and was “trying to kill her”. The woman said that she was inside of the residence with her three children. Officers arrived at the residence and found the woman’s two oldest children (10 and 12 years old) outside in front of the neighbor’s residence. The children said that the suspect was in the residence with the woman and another young child.

Once officers confirmed that the suspect was inside the residence with the woman and her youngest child, officers contacted the woman by her cell phone, and she confirmed that the suspect was armed and that she could not leave the residence.

After several minutes, Officers heard the woman in distress screaming for help, so they immediately forced entry into the residence and encountered the woman and the suspect. Officers were able to get the woman and child away from the suspect who was then taken into custody. Neither the woman nor the children were injured during this incident.

The suspect was identified as Concord resident 35-year-old Jasson Tan who is restrained from the woman. Tan was later booked at the Contra Costa County Jail.

Man arrested in Concord for stealing car from resident’s driveway Saturday

On Saturday, June 1, one of our Concord residents got up early to volunteer at a sports competition that showcases Veterans and active duty service members with disabilities. Before driving off, he realized he left important items in the house. As he entered his house, he immediately heard his vehicle pulling out of his driveway (he realized he forgot to take the keys out). He ran out front and saw his car driving off towards Clayton Road.

Our good-hearted community member dialed 9-1-1 and Concord Police responded immediately to the call. Within 10 minutes of being broadcast an observant Officer saw the stolen vehicle driving on Willow Pass Rd. near Landana Dr. (almost four miles away from where it was taken). The car thief casually turned off on a side street, but then pulled over once he saw the officer was still following behind. The suspect was placed under arrest without incident and the registered owner was reunited with his car.

We are happy to report that because of CPD’s quick response, our community member was able to make it in time to volunteer for the Valor Games!

Stabbing in Concord Thursday afternoon

On Thursday, May 30, 2019 just before 2pm, Officers responded to the 1400 block of Bel Air Dr. for a report of a stabbing. Investigators learned that three male teenagers, two of which are brothers, were playing video games inside an apartment. For reasons that are unknown at this time, one of the brothers produced a knife and stabbed the visiting friend several times. The juvenile suspect then fled the apartment; however, soon after called CPD dispatch to turn himself in.

The juvenile suspect was taken into custody a few blocks away from the apartment without incident. The victim was flown to a trauma center based on the injuries he sustained. There is no additional threat to the community.

This is an active investigation and no further details are being released at this time.

Construction on Kirker Pass Road truck climbing lane project to begin May 13

Contra Costa County Public Works will begin construction on the Kirker Pass Road Northbound Truck Climbing Lane Project. The project will improve safety and reduce congestion along Kirker Pass Road from the Concord Pavilion to the northern Hess Road intersection by constructing a truck climbing lane in the northbound direction. Pavement widening will occur on the east side of the roadway to provide a 12-foot truck lane and eight-foot paved shoulder. Widening will require construction of six retaining walls adjacent to the roadway. The project also includes paving both the north and southbound lanes between the City of Concord/County limits to approximately 4,200 feet north of North Hess Road.

Construction will begin on Monday, May 13, 2019, with completion in the Spring of 2020, barring unforeseen circumstances. Construction operations will be scheduled to minimize impacts to commute traffic.

Funding for this project is provided by Measure J, State Transportation Improvement Program, State Match, Local Streets and Road Program, and gas tax revenues provided by the SB1 Road Repair and Accountability Act. More information for this project can be found at http://www.cccounty.us/pwdmap.

Concord man found with 10 dogs in wire crates, one dead arrested for felony animal cruelty

On Thursday, a concerned community member called the Concord Police Department reporting that there were three or four dogs “going crazy” inside of a travel trailer that was parked on the street. When Officers arrived on scene, they saw a small dog standing inside by the open trailer door. The dog was barking, panting heavily, and its fur appeared matted and wet. From outside, the officer was able to see that the trailer was filthy and stacked with various items that were almost touching the ceiling in some places.

Shortly after arriving on scene, Officers were able to find the registered owner of the trailer, Jeremiah Weberling, who admitted the dogs belonged to him and that he used the trailer as a mobile “dog house.” Concerned for the well-being of the other dogs inside, an officer stepped in the trailer and saw five more dogs in wire crates. None of the pups appeared to have any water or food and looked to be in poor health. The condition of the trailer was so bad that the officer was only able to take a couple steps before having to go back outside. After seeing the poor condition of the trailer and the dogs, the investigating Officer placed Weberling under arrest for animal cruelty and requested Contra Costa County Animal Services respond to the scene.

Animal Services arrived at the location and a total of ten dogs were found; one of whom was dead. Since all of the other nine dogs were in such poor health, Animal Control brought them to a local emergency vet for treatment. Unfortunately, two of the dogs were so sick and injured they had to be euthanized; the remaining seven are expected to survive.

We know that these cases are extremely sad and difficult to even read. This is a reminder that animal abuse is a very serious crime. Today, the District Attorney’s Office filed ten charges of felony animal cruelty against Weberling and he will remain in jail on a $100,000 bail. There is no word yet on if or when the other seven dogs can be adopted, but we will let you know as soon as we hear.

Man arrested for breaking into Concord City Hall, stealing suit Wednesday

On April 24th, Concord Police Officer’s responded to an alarm activation call at City Hall at 5:00 am. It was determined that a break in and burglary just occurred. Officers searched the area and found the suspect, later identified as Jesse Marron, near the Library. When officers tried to detain Marron, he assaulted several PD personnel. He was arrested and found to be in possession of stolen property from the building. He was also in possession of drug paraphernalia.

Images of Marron breaking into the building were captured on the surveillance system. The District Attorney’s Office has charged Marron with several crimes, including Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property, Obstructing an Officer in the Performance of Their Duties, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Marron remains in county jail.

Since many of our followers are commenting on how well Mr. Marron is dressed, we just wanted to let you know that the suit he is wearing was also stolen during the burglary.

Man pleads guilty for pandering from 2018 Concord human trafficking sting operation

On April 24, 2019, Lawrence Taylor pleaded guilty to pandering and agreed to accept a sentence of four years state prison. The Hon. Judge Patricia Scanlon accepted his guilty plea and will impose sentence on May 1, along with a criminal court protective order barring Taylor from having contact with the victim for a period of 10 years.

On March 10, 2018, Taylor was arrested as part of a law enforcement operation conducted by the Concord Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Safe Streets Task Force and the Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office. The operation was designed to identify and apprehend individuals using online dating sites to exploit women for purposes of prostitution and also to connect the women to services and support.

Taylor, who was on parole for armed robbery, was apprehended after driving with the victim to a hotel where she had a pre-arranged “date” with an undercover officer. He was found to be in possession of two cell phones. The victim was immediately connected to a Human Trafficking Advocate from the District Attorney’s Office and offered services and support.

Forensic analysis of cell phones seized in the case showed that Taylor had been encouraging the victim to work as a street prostitute and also to prostitute through posting internet ads like the one involved on this night.

“Collaborative enforcement operations such as these are key to identifying exploiters in our community, holding them accountable for their crimes, and giving victims an opportunity to connect to services and support,” said Human Trafficking Unit Supervisor Dana Filkowski. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Jay Melaas and Filkowski.

“The Concord Police Department is committed to working with our justice and victim-service providers to end sex trafficking and exploitation in our community,” added Concord Police Sergeant Jeff Ross, who participated in the enforcement event. “We will continue to organize and implement investigative strategies such as this.”
